NP structures - Description

This is the first fully implemented syntactic project in AUTOTYP. We record for each language formally distinct types of complex NPs, e.g. NPs constituted by genitives, by construct state marking, by possessor agreement, etc. The information about the individual markers involved come from the data file on grammatical markers. Information proprietory to NP structure records includes

• structural type (construct state NP, dependent-driven agreement, compounding, etc.)

• subset semantic distinctions on the kinds of nouns participating in a given NP type (subsets of kin terms, subsets of meronyms, etc.).

• word order

• cryptotype notions (as when an NP type is formally defined by obligatory - vs. optional possessor agreement).

All this information has dedicated definition files. In a sub-project we are currently expanding the NP structure modules in order to typologize over the multiple functions found with such NP markers as as linking articles and nominalizers (e.g. as attribute markers, as clause nominalizers, as focus markers, etc.).
